Annual Event - mixed media statewide competition - juried art show

The Saginaw Township State of the Arts 2013 Art Exhibition Reception & Awards presentation is Sunday April 21, 2-5pm (awards at 3pm). This is a juried exhibition of Michign Artists with cash prizes and awards. Monday through Friday 8am-5pm. Closed on weekends. Admission is Free!

All in the Timing - a collection of one-act plays by American playwright David Ives. The short comic plays focus on language, wordplay, existentialist perspectives on life and meaning, and the complications involved in romantic relationships.  The evening of one acts will consist of “Sure Thing”, “Words, Words, Words”, “ The Universal Language”, “The Philadelphia” and “Variations on the Death of Trotsky”.

We will kick off the season this year by unveiling a new gon car.  It is the William & Lillian Stenger memorial car.  William & Lillian both passed away in 2012. Bill was the designer, builder and owner of Junction Valley Railroad and Lillian was his faithful wife of 51 years who worked tirelessly by his side to help hime fulfill his dream. "We" the family will continue to operate this dream for many years to come.  Along with the unveiling of the memorial car we will release butterflies in their memory.  This will all take place at 10:30am.. The first train will depart shortly there after.

Do your part to feed the birds in your neighborhood by crafting a take-home pinecone bird feeder.  Watch the birds flock to your yard!  Play bird bingo and win a prize.

Join Chris Thomson, great-grandson of Lucy Burrows Morley, as he talks about finding these once hidden images and how he came to rescue and restore these remarkable photos.

This exhibit features the photography of Saginaw native, and co-founder of the Morley Foundation, Lucy Burrows Morley. Even though Morley was an amateur photographer, she had a remarkable sense of composition and photographed her subjects in more candid moments. There will be approximately thirty pieces in the exhibit located in Centennial Hall.

Feld Entertainment, Inc., producers of Disney On Ice and Disney Live!, is taking top performing cable TV series for preschoolers to the stage in Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure. Featuring characters from the smash hits Sofia the First and Jake and the Never Land Pirates, this brand new production launches a 90-city national tour in July 2013. Tickets for the Saginaw performances at the Heritage Theater in The Dow Event Center, November 2nd, 2013, go on sale May 28th, 2013. Show times are 1 pm and  4 pm November 2.

The tenth annual Jazz on Jefferson is a a one-night celebration focusing on the vibrant institutions along historic South Jefferson Avenue. The event features a variety of performers, a classic and antique car show, architectural walking tours, food vendors and strawberry shortcake at the Castle Museum. The event begins at 4:45 pm and ends at 8 p.m. with a free concert at First Congregational Church, 403 S. Jefferson, Saginaw, immediately following.  Enjoy the music of the world-renowned New Reformation Jazz Band.

The One Hundred Club of Saginaw County's 13th Annual Golf Outing and Cookout

Flower Day celebrates the art and beauty of traditional Japanese flower arrangement! Ikebabna, the art of Japanese flower arranging, has been practiced for many years throuhgout Japan and is still practiced as an art form today. There will be a demonstration of ikebana for public viewing.

Be Greek for the day, enjoy home-made Greek food and pastries, gyros, baklava, galactobouriko, saganaki (opa), kalamari, loukoumades, dolmades, and many more foods.  Take a tour of the church or watch children dance their native dances.  Friday & Saturday Noon-11 pm, Sunday Noon-6 pm. 

For the serious swimmer! Participants are allowed to swim the 1/4 mile across the 40 acre lake. All swimmers must be able to swim the distance without assistance. The beach is open only to distance swimmers at this time. All swimmers must wear a parks swim cap (available for $2). Saginaw County reserves the right to deny participation to anyone who they believe is not capable of this endeavor. Cost is $5 per participant.

Fathers are treated to a free train ride on Father's Day, his paying child must accompany him. Great time for families to get together for a picnic. Our play area is included in the pricing and there are plenty of activities for "kid's" of all ages! Scooters, pedal cars, swings, basketball & more. Plenty of clean picnic tables, and grills, just bring all your supplies for the day and load them on the train.

This three day commuter camp will emphasize fundamentals, form, technique, and weight room instruction. Our camps are non-contact and there will be no pads worn. Each camper will work on both offense and defense as well as individual instruction in passing, receiving, running, blocking and tackling.

Emphasis of this camp is on combining fun with skill development and team concept. Each camper will be required to run several drills in a group situation. Campers will be separated into age groups of grade 3-5 and grades 6-8.

This camp offers a solid foundation in skill development and motivation. The teaching progression takes into account age and skill differences. Campers will work on footwork, defensive techniques, setting and using screens, shooting, passing and receiving, and much more. Campers can sign up for one of two sessions the first starting at 8:30am and ending at noon. The second session starts at 1:00 and ends at 5:00. Each session costs $50 individually and $90 for campers to participate in both camp sessions.

This event features local Thomas Township businesses, churches and organizations participating in special events and sales during the week of the Shields Summer Festival. Numerous businesses took part in the FREE event in 2012 offering everything from sidewalk sales to free hot dogs and car cleaning (on parade day). The 12th annual popular one-day literacy event sponsored by the READ Association of Saginaw County and local businesses and organizations promotes and encourages summer and family reading time. Features a free book for every child, animal themed booth activities, author visits, storytelling, and amphitheater programs.  Regular admission, Members free.

Two former college friends - misfit Harry and materialistic Milt - reunited by chance when Milt stops Harry from jumping off a bridge. Each discovers the other is equally miserable as they share hard-luck stories. Milt sees in Harry an answer to his primary problem - his wife Ellen, who he tries to foist on his old pal so he can run off with his mistress.  Laughter and mayhem abound as this love triangle blossoms.

Crunching Competition!  Karate Chomping!  Veggie Face Creations!  Seasonal Fruit Tasting!....and so munch more will be happening at the MMCM when The Fresh Food Fairy visits on June 22.  Her presentations encourage plenty of laughter and munching through activities like crunching carrots as loud as possible, karate chomping green beans, creating veggie faces, and sampling seasonal fruits and vegetables.  The Fresh Food Fairy’s pedal-powered smoothies will be available, and kids can go for a spin on her bike-powered blender.

Each team will be guaranteed five regulation basketball games. MHSAA rules apply on all games, with two minute overtimes. Games scheduled on Monday, 6/24 begin at 11 am and will end at 9 pm, and games on Tuesday, 6/25, begin at 8 am and end when all games are complete.
 
All campers and coaches will receive a free SVSU Team Camp shirt.
 
Coach Baruth and the Cardinals Basketball Staff will be available to talk basketball during the entire camp.
 
Bring your own basketballs and jerseys with numbers. 
 
Your team must have a coach present during all games.

This one day camp provides participants with an accelerated and intense soccer environment designed specifically to evaluate those players who are serious about competing at the collegiate level. Our summer prospect camp will focus on challenging each player's ability to handle game situations, while also showcasing their individual talents during two scrimmage sessions.
Aside from playing in the next level environment, this prospect camp affords participants the ability to display their talents in front of our coaching staff; as we look to acquire quality players to assist us in winning National Championships. Five participants from last year's Prospect Camp joined the Saginaw Valley State University soccer team.

Tanabata is the Japanese Star Festival. The tale of Tanabata tells the story of two stars, Orihime the Weaving Girl and Kengyu the Cowherd, whose love was torn apart by the jealousy of another star. The jealous star made it so that Orihime and Kengyu could only be reunited in love once a year in the Milk Way on July 7th. Children mainly participate in Tanabata with activities such as decorating paper ornaments and branches in the likeness of the Milk Way, Orihime, and Kengyu. At the end of the day, the branches are thrown into the river as a means of dispelling misfortune.

SVSU track camps are continuing to intensify instruction and workouts for campers. The coaching staff is enhancing skill camps to assist players in developing their technique while bringing basic knowledge to beginners.
Rod Cowan and his coaching staff are pleased to announce the schedule for the SVSU Track & Field Summer Camp. The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 6-12. You will learn event philosophy, proper techniques, flexibility, strength and power development exercises specific to your event. Shot put and discus campers must provide their own implements. Campers will need to bring spikes, training flats, throwing shoes, a towel and a water bottle. A daily snack will be provided.
 

This 4 evening camp provides participants with an introduction to Volleyball skills, rules and concepts. It is an entry or beginner level Camp with an emphasis on learning the fundamentals of the game in a fun and relaxed environment. Players are grouped by age and experience to enhance their learning process, and create an enjoyable and safe environment to take risks, learn new skills and meet new friends.

Go to the Zoo Event Tent and Barnyard/Contact Area to meet Michigan farming and agricultural exhibitors, play games and participate in activities to learn about how our food and so much more comes from plants and animals down on the farm! Regular admission, Members free.  

At the Mid-Michigan Soccer Academy we teach all players the fundamentals and tactical decision making skills that are appropriate for their age and skill levels. Our instructors will challenge players to do their best and always have fun while they learn.  We will instruct the very basics of soccer to the beginner, as well as the advanced techniques and tactics to the top talent players

This one day camp provides participants with instruction on all aspects of the collegiate softball game, including hitting, fielding, and strategy. Each participant will receive intense instruction from the SVSU players and coaching staff, and leave with a better understanding of what it takes to play college softball.

Taller.. Faster..Stronger…Smarter! It’s all about competition in this thrilling event as visitors discover special skills and adaptations that set some animals apart. Find out how animals measure up against each other, and against you! Regular admission, Members free.

Celebrate summer by painting the MMCM car, participating in bubble fun, helping us decorate our sidewalk with colorful sidewalk chalk, joining in outside parachute games, and running through the sprinkler (please bring your own towel and change of clothes)!  Weather permitting, of course!

Outdoor Christian Music Festival featuring a diversified line up of high energy national artists including Newsboys, Sanctus Real, Disciple & Flame as well as 3 regional artists. In this Beginning Kayaking class, you will learn the differences between kayak styles and canoes and discover how stable and easily maneuverable kayaks can be. Class sizes are small and cozy with a maximum of eight people per class.
Classes will be held at the Wm. H. Haithco Rec. Area.

This 3 day camp provides participants with an exposure to advanced Volleyball skills, rules and concepts. It is a high school level Camp with an emphasis on training and reinforcing the fundamentals of the game in a competitive and fun environment. Individual skill and Team play is addressed to help players raise their level of play and gain a deeper knowledge and level of execution of the game. Players are grouped by experience level to enhance their learning process, and create an enjoyable and safe environment to take risks, learn new skills and meet new friends.

This is a high school level Camp with an emphasis on training and reinforcing the fundamentals of the Hitter position along with high level skills and decision making in this crucial Volleyball role. Individual skill and Team play is addressed to help players raise their level of play and gain a deeper knowledge and level of execution of the game. Players are grouped by experience level to enhance their learning process, and create a competitive environment to take risks, learn new skills and meet new friends.

This Camp is run at the same time as our Setter Camp to utilize the other position for better feedback and game-like situational learning.

This 4 day Team Camp provides both Varsity and JV Teams with opportunities to build their Volleyball skills through organized training methods, practice repetition and a competitive training environment. A combination of drill sessions, scrimmages and games are used to address each Team’s needs and allow the Coach to adapt the Camp to their Team’s current areas of development. This Team Camp focuses on court communication, teamwork and offensive and defensive systems. Each Session starts with drills and progresses to competitions to give the opportunity to learn and apply the skills and concepts being taught.

The Youth Soccer Camp is for players of all levels! The camp is developed and constructed so that players of all levels can learn, get exercise, and have a great time throughout the week! There will be instructional games and activities as well as team building/leadership activities all based around the game of soccer throughout the week.
Every kid that attends camp will benefit from the high energy and fun environment as well as the focus on learning and development.
 

The SVSU High School Team Camp is for high school teams looking to have a competitive experience in a college environment while preparing for the fall season. The camp is fun but it is very high paced and competitive to ensure we are preparing you for the fall. Instruction and coaching will be run by the SVSU Soccer staff as well as guest coaches from other institutions.

This one day camp provides participants with an accelerated and intense softball environment designed specifically to evaluate those players who are serious about competing at the collegiate level. Our summer prospect camp will focus on challenging each player's ability to handle game situations, while also showcasing their individual talents during scrimmage sessions. Each player will receive a completed evaluation form.

Friday, August 23rd kicks off a weekend of festivities with a tribute in honor of the Saginaw born, international superstar Stevie Wonder. The evening promises to be packed with entertainment from the moment you walk up to the DOW Event Center on the red carpet greeted by Ryan Seacrest and Carmen Electra played by local Pit & Balcony performers. 6 pm kicks off with a beer & wine reception in the atrium with musical entertainment by over 25 professional musicians including Stevie Wonder protégé Harrell Holmes, Mike Brush, Julie Mulady, Sharrie Williams, the Michigan Jazz Trail Big Band and more. Special presentations and proclamations will be made by local, regional and state officials to Stevie Wonder/proxy as guests enjoy a spectacular dinner as well as music and video performances followed by more music and dancing enjoyed by all who attend. Then Saturday, August 24th, 2013, Noon-8 pm, Saginaw “WONDER”fest will celebrate talent in the Great Lakes Bay Region with a multi-cultural, free family event on Ojibway Island in Saginaw. As the world legend Stevie Wonder was born in Saginaw, the Great Lakes Bay Region is home to many talented individuals and many community organizations that offer outlets for our youth to explore and excel at their talents. From music to performing arts to fine arts and more, an anticipated 5000 + people will attend this year’s event which recognizes Saginaw’s own superstar.
